Our February sale brings together a curated group of works from private collections, ranging from ancient pottery to modern and contemporary design. Highlights include two of James Turrell's very first holograms, a strong collection of ancient Mimbres pottery, museum-worthy African tribal art from a Private collection, and more than 90 lots of fine jewelry. The catalogue moves easily across periods and cultures, with an emphasis on objects chosen for their visual strength and quality. Many have been held privately for years and are rarely seen on the market.

Catalogue Note
The present works are holograms by James Turrell published by the Center for Contemporary Arts of Santa Fe (CAA). They are in fact the first examples by the artist of small scale holograms on glass, a format that would later develop into a wide-ranging body of work. The project comprised four holograms—INOUTIN/OUT, and ON—and was initially conceived as a multiple; only one complete set was produced.

The holograms were exhibited together at the Hayward Gallery, London, in 1993 and subsequently entered a private collection in 1997. By 2003, one panel from the original group had been lost. CAA, with the knowledge of the artist’s studio, permitted the remaining panels to be sold at public auction, where they were catalogued as individual holograms rather than as a unified work. The current owner acquired the panels in 2007.

Two holograms from the original project remain together and are offered here as a single lot.
